Nicolas Kyriakides, Executive President of the Cyprus Forum, and Giorgos Neokleous wrote an article entitled “USA-Cyprus relations amid the USA’s 2024 presidential elections” for the Special Edition of the electronic newsletter In Depth Volume 21-Issue 3 entitled “Crucial elections in the West and turbulent times in the world” issued by the Centre for European and International Affairs.
The authors noted that by 2024, USA-Cyprus relations were stronger than ever, particularly marked by the establishment of a strategic dialogue between the two nations. This dialogue, typically reserved for NATO members (which Cyprus is not), focuses on key areas such as security, energy, trade, and cybersecurity. Additionally, Cyprus has been working towards lifting US arms embargoes and visa restrictions. Despite these achievements, the article emphasizes that the upcoming US Presidential elections in 2024 could impact this progress.
The authors stressed that under the Biden administration, military and energy cooperation reached new heights, including joint initiatives like the humanitarian sea corridor to aid Gaza. The article further explored how a continuation of Democratic leadership under Kamala Harris is unlikely to drastically alter current policies toward Cyprus, while a Trump administration could introduce uncertainties based on past foreign policy unpredictability.
In conclusion, the authors pointed out that Cyprus remains a strategically valuable partner for the US in a volatile region, but the future of this relationship will depend on broader geopolitical dynamics and US relations with Turkey, making predictions difficult.
